The Bob

Bob Marshall. Who was he? I have no idea. But his name is on a short list with Ansel Adams, John Muir, and Frank Church. Or should be. Or maybe its weird to make a list of awesome wilderness areas in the lower 48 named after white dudes. Anyway, the Bob is awesome. Went over Pyramid Pass, and down Youngs Creek. The first two crossings were tough, the third was bad. Got three quarters of the way and the rest was deeper. Too late, I'll just hop/swim the rest, while being swept downstream a bit. That's worked out OK so far, except you get worried real quick about whether a log on the other side is a sweeper (bad) or something you want to grab onto (good). It was fine, except I was freezing. So I danced around cussing and screaming for a bit, then walked on.  Twenty minutes later, I heard some pounding, and turned in time to see, thirty yards away, a cow elk running for her life from a wolf, who was already running equal to her midside. Another wolf came by ten seconds later. I thi

Seeley Lake

Does this still work? Posting via email, that is. I'm in Seeley Lake. Just dropped seven pounds of gear: snowshoes, ice axe, warm clothing, extra tent pole... Base weight is much better, but food from here to East Glacier still very heavy.  If you want to see photos, go to instagram.com/g_theonion . I'll try to cross post to FB but I can't remember my password.

Let's Go

I ran the Double Dipsea with team Bolos Perdidos again. We moved out, GF is in Virginia, George is on his way, and Alice is parked with a friend, deposit in hand for an eventual sale for $9,500. I'm off to Missoula tomorrow. I've got friends picking me up and shuttling me around for a few errands, and then I'll head off into the Rattlesnake Wilderness and the Bob. I should arrive in East Glacier eventually. My draft schedule is here . We'll see how it goes. People tell me it was a high snow year. Double Dipsea Goodbye, West Oakland Goodbye, Pill Hill

The Plan

I accepted a job in DC starting mid-September. Gf accepted a job starting late June in Williamsburg, VA. Our stuff is in two Uhaul boxes, making its way across the country, where it will sit in storage for a few months. Our lease is up Sunday. That night gf flies to Virginia. George is scheduled to fly to Richmond via Atlanta, but it looks like Atlanta is going to be too hot (>85*), in which case pets can't fly. So maybe I'll drive to SLC to put him on a flight to Dulles, or there's a redeye through Atlanta to Reagan that may be cool enough, or I could drive to LA and get him on a direct flight to Dulles. Do you want to pick him up in DC and watch him until Amy can come get him on a weekend? Somehow I also need to sell my truck. Do you want it? Please buy it . It won't do me any good in DC. Once that is all taken care of, I'm going hiking! I was hoping to fly from Oakland to Missoula, Montana and walk from there into the Bob Marshall Wilderness. I didn't
