The Grand Paladin?
There's an OK article about ultra-runner Matt Carpenter in the NYT. It claims he is the "grand paladin of high-altitude distance running," which I take issue with, mostly because a "paladin" is a character class in Dungeons & Dragons, not a word you're actually supposed to use in real life, and more importantly not a word I should go around admitting that I know is a word from Dungeons & Dragons.

Eh, just pretend you know it from the Chanson de Roland and the rest of medieval chivalric literature, like I do. Though, come to think of it, I'm not sure that would make you any less of a dork...

ReplyDeleteI am pretty sure at some point in college in Washington State I played D&D and I had a character that was a halfling that rode a large dog around instead of a horse. That was pretty awesome. The other night, at an Abe Lincoln party, I mentioned RPGs and miniatures and said something like, "You know, like Dungeons and Dragrons, or War Hammer, or Battle Tech..." and at that point everyone stared at me in silence. Because as it turned out, I was in fact that only person present who had played role playing games. It's a lost cause I think to try and deny dorkitude.
